History of Phi Mu

Phi Mu was founded as the Philomathean Society on January 4, 1852 at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia.

Mary DuPont Lines, Mary Myrick Daniel, and Martha Hardaway Redding created the organization to develop a special friendship among women of the college with objectives toward the improvement of social, moral, and mental aspects of Philomathean women. The Philomathean Society became known as Phi Mu Fraternity in 1904.

Phi Mu is a women’s organization which provides personal academic development, service to others, commitment to excellence and lifelong friendships through a shared tradition. Phi Mu encourages our members to imagine, believe and achieve their aspirations.

Today, more than 140,000 women are members of Phi Mu. Phi Mu is the second oldest collegiate sorority in the world.
